This week marks the 4th anniversary of Christian Peterson Properties becoming a dynamic duo. Back in 2020, Amy Peterson quit her job of 13 years as an engineer and began her career as a real estate agent.
Is it easy to work with your spouse? Yes and no. It’s simultaneously the easiest and hardest thing we’ve ever done in our work lives.
We work together better than any admin or agent that I could have otherwise hired. We each have skills and talents that complement the other. We probably do the work of 3-4 people just the two of us, but it never feels like that.
At the same time, working with your spouse has unique challenges. You have to monitor your relationship constantly to make sure you are a couple first and business partners second. It’s easy for work to creep into every part of your life.
We’ve found that a husband/wife business works best when it’s an equal partnership just like your marriage. Amy started off as my admin. Yeah…that didn’t go well. Try bossing her around sometime and see what happens. Now we both can step in and handle any situation that comes up.
Amy left her job because she wanted to build our business instead of somebody else’s. Together we’ve grown a family business. Hopefully some day our kids will take what we built and carry it even further. For now, I’m happy we’re in this together.
