The “chill guy” is becoming a popular meme on the internet right now. And he is just the mascot I needed this year, especially over this holiday season.
A couple of days ago, my nephew asked me if I was “in my winter arc”. I had never heard the phrase before. Apparently, it is a Tiktok trend where people spend the winter months between October and January focusing on knocking out self-improvement goals.
In past years I probably would have set some aggressive goals like “meditate every day” or “read 10 books” or “workout every day” and worked to grind them out in Q4. This year I feel like MY winter arc needs to be in the opposite direction. I want to focus on slowing down, being present, and enjoying myself.
As a business owner, especially one whose business is sales, there’s always pressure to do more. Get one more client. Make one more sale. Meet your EOY goals. By this time of the year though, at least in real estate, there’s very little you can do to affect what will happen this year. So any work we do, especially near the holidays, will come at the expense of something else important like spending time with family.
At the beginning of the year, my coach asked me what my business goals for the year were. I told him that I wanted “enough”. I didn’t want to put any numbers around what that meant. Now that we’re towards the end of the year, I feel like we met that goal. We worked and played and kept a good balance of both. We met our needs and furthered our goals.
Having been in business now for 12 years, I still find myself getting pretty wound up and lost in business mode. I can get caught up in thoughts about business when I’m supposed to be present with my family. But I’m learning and I’m getting better.
This meme is going to be my reminder that it’s time to reward ourselves by slowing down and enjoying the moment. Eat good food. Have a good conversation. Experience joy and love. You know...just being a chill guy.
